Product 'Pilling' – what is it and how do we prevent it?
Product Pilling is a term used in the beauty industry to describe when products begin to roll up into little balls on your skin – like when a jumper starts to bobble. Some products are more prone to it than others, due to the combination of different types of ingredients, and how they react against other products. The best thing is – it is totally preventable, and we’ve put together a list to help you avoid it.
To avoid the risk of ‘pilling’…
- Allow drying time and proper absorption of each product between application, it may be worth completing another task in between time, just to make sure each layer is fully absorbed.
- Reduce the amount of product you’re using - any excess will continue to sit on top of the skin meaning that this layer of product will never properly ‘set’ or be absorbed.
- Use products with similar ingredients. If you favour water-based products, your best bet is to keep this consistent throughout your skincare routine, and vice-versa with oil-based products. Skincare is like cooking – in the sense that oil and water simply don’t mix!
- If your holy grail products do contain a mixture of oil and water formulations, consider the order you’re applying them. Avoid application over an oil-based product as they decrease absorption. We recommend using light water-based products first and heavier, oil-based products on top.
Overall, time is of the essence to allow for proper drying time and absorption. But, if you’re short of it, start off by simply reducing the amount of product you’re using – it should massively help!
